Maiori is
located among gardens and terraces rich of citruses: it
is in the most inner part of Amalfi
Coast, in front of a beautiful beach,
at the mouth of Reginna Major small river.
It was called Reginna Major by Romans to distinguish it
by the near Reginna Minor, at whose mouth
there is Minori.
The Collegiata
di Santa Maria a Mare and Avvocata
Sanctuary have a very rich artistic and cultural
heritage together with the other monuments: San
Nicola de ThoroPlano and Miramare
castles, San Francesco church and
monastery. Sulfurea and Pandora caves are
actually charming, Cala Bellavaia,
a wonderful beach attainable only from the sea, is
very charming, too. From the road 163 that brings to
Maiori, it is possible to admire wonderful landscapes
made of indented coasts and steep slopes. There is
also a small ancient round tower built
in 1530: today only its ruins remain. An ancient tradition
tells that Atrani inhabitants had seen the ships of
the pirates arriving, Maiori couldn’t see the
pirates from its towers, so Atrani inhabitants
made a great fire to alert them about the arrival of
pirates. Since that moment, when the two towns celebrate
their Patrons, the two mayors pay a visit to each other
and a great fire is lit on the beach on the eve of
the feast. Erchie beach is very charming
and Capo d’Orso promontory is
very nice with its shape that is like the head of a
bear (Capo d’Orso means head of the bear).
The
famous film director Roberto Rossellini loved
Maiori and its inhabitants very much, some episodes of
his films are set there: for example in the movie "Paisà" in
1946 when he was enchanted by the Norman tower, the children
of the place (called scugnizzi) and the friars of San
Francesco monastery. Some episodes of the movie "Il
viaggio in Italia" of 1953 are set in Maiori, too
and they exalt the religious faith of its inhabitants.
Maiori
is in a strategic position, in the middle of Amalfi Coast.
It is 15 km from the “ceramics” paradise
of Vietri
sul Mare; 10 km from the picturesque village
of Cetara.
Maiori is near Minori (1 km), Atrani (4 km), Amalfi (5
km), and Ravello,
the town of music (9 km). Praiano is
15 km far from Maiori while Furore 14
km and Positano 22
km.
